Support 2 – Good pointers

This is the second in a series on support raising. You can see the first one here.

This is more for the support raisers. A couple of ideas and things to remember as you go about your support raising. Some of these may be reminders from years ago, or reminders from a couple of weeks ago…

First, Don’t assume they have the vision. I see this as the biggest and easiest mistake to make. You have the vision, you’ve casted it 100 times before. You casted it last time u raised support but forgot to this time or you assumed they have been reading your newsletters that you’ve been sending them. Don’t assume this. You’re passionate about your mission field, take the time to tell the story.

Secondly, Have a plan. Voice this plan. Tell them when you’ll call them. If you leave a message, tell them when you’ll call them back. If they agree to support you, ask them if you can follow up in a week to make sure the form was filled out. Which leads me to my next point.

Thirdly, the ends are very hard. Very hard. It is hard to make those first phone calls. You have to get over this. Have. To. Also, on the back end it can be hard to get those pledge forms in. Have a plan and follow through. Follow up with them. Don’t be overbearing but have a plan and do your due diligence.

Fourthly, put the time in. One would think this goes without saying but it doesn’t. Support raising takes a lot of time and it is hard to understand that until you’ve tried to do it. It’s easy to be distracted and it’s easy to not put forth all the effort and time that you should. I think if more people raised their budgets full time they would have better budgets.

Fifthly, Ask anyone and ask everyone. Make a huge list and spread that list wide. I don’t care who they are, at the least you get the chance to sell your vision to another person! I firmly believe that individuals is a better strategy than churches.

Sixthly, don’t treat people like pledge forms. Be nice, be thankful, be grateful.

Lastly, have fun. Honestly, I enjoy raising support. I have since my second year doing it. It can be a lot of fun talking to people about doing what I love! How great is that?
