Weddings

This weekend I had the privilege of officiating the Collins-Ternes wedding, it was my second wedding in six days starting with the Rosser-Orr celebration! A couple of thoughts.

Northeast Support Raising Training

Hello friends! Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Northeast Support Raising Training Seminar hosted here in Charlottesville. We have over 20 students, alum, and staff workers from our Northeast and Atlantic Seaboard Chi Alphas coming into town to learn how to raise up a team of supporters to go to the field that God has called them.

I’m sitting here, looking over my notes, and can’t help but be excited for what’s happening in our movement and specifically at UVA. My life was changed through Chi Alpha at UVA and now I get the chance to equip others to take the gospel to places that desperately need the gospel. It’s such a joy to have these times of reflection of what God has done in me and what God is currently doing through our ministry here at UVA. I’m blown away by His faithfulness all these years. Katie and I have lived the life of faith for seven years now and God has always provided.

Would you take a moment and pray for all of the students, alum, and staff workers that are coming to the training this weekend? It can be a scary place to begin the fundraising process. Some of them don’t have any church contacts, some came to faith in Chi Alpha, some have parents who don’t support fundraising, and some have just run out of contacts. Would you pray that they would be encouraged? That God would speak to them. And that they would come to 110% of their budget raised by the first week of August.

Thanks so much for your prayers. I believe they make a difference!

Being a They

This past Monday we had the distinct privilege of having Pastor Brett Fuller come and share with Chi Alpha at UVA. As always, Pastor Brett had many great things to say, but one continues to stand out to me.

#XAWR14 halfwaythere

We are officially halfway through the XAWR14! We’ve had two main sessions, a breakout session, lunch and some of the free time. Students are milling about the lobby playing corn hole, swimming in the pool, or out checking out the DC/NOVA scene for some dinner. Tonight they’ll come back for Session III and we’ll close the retreat tomorrow morning with a session and probably a huge picture.

I say probably because I don’t know that we’ll fit.

Thisthingishuge. Students and staff have come from up and down the Eastern seaboard, from North Carolina to New Jersey. It’s amazing to see what God is doing in Chi Alpha everywhere in just a snapshot of a weekend.

Oh, and Jim Bradford is amazing.

I already knew that, but I didn’t know that. Dude is killing it, preaching on Ecclesiastes. I know, for a fact, that I  have a better handle on the book of Ecclesiastes right now than I ever have in my entire life. His knowledge of the text and the fact that he has studied the text continues to shine through.

I know what you’re thinking. It’s because he has his PhD in Rocket Science. It’s probably all over everyone’s head.

You would be dead wrong.

Jim is crushing it. Speaking to our hearts and giving us applicable messages for college students and the future leaders of the world that these students will be. I would highly recommend searching for the hashtag #XAWR14 and seeing some of the bombs dropped.

Jim showed us that the Teacher sought after fulfillment in studies, parties, and wealth. And none of them satisfied! All the things under the sun cannot satisfied. They are created things. Only the Creator can satisfy. #powerful.

This morning Jim taught on work. He told us to fire our boss and work for the Lord. To defy mediocrity and strive for excellence. And to work with Jesus, believing that He cares about His Creation and wants to see it cultivated. We can partner with God in this and sometimes, He will give us insights into things we could not have figured out ourselves.

I was pretty encouraged by the stories Jim told of George Washington Carver and some scientist who God revealed some intense formula to. It was cool to see some practical stories of how that had happened.

If you’re not at XAWR14, then quite frankly, you’re missing out. It’s been a great weekend thus far and it will continue!

Potomac Ministers Retreat 2013: Immersed

I had the privilege of making it to the Potomac Ministry Networks Ministers Retreat this past week. It was at the Eastern Shore in Cambridge, Maryland. It was a beautiful place with great fellowship and teaching. I’ll share some of my takeaways below. Maybe they’ll help remind you of something spoken there or will allow you to glean the things I gleaned if you weren’t there.

How to Get the Most Out of a Retreat

Image

The Chi Alpha at UVA Fall Retreat is this weekend at beautiful Eagle Eyrie. Whenever a retreat rolls around, I go through a mental checklist to prepare my introverted self for everything that is about to happen. Here are some helpful hints and preparation pieces to get the most out of your retreat experience.

I just want you to enjoy the retreat as much as Emma enjoyed that Sno-Cone.

AC SICM 13 Recap

Sometimes, God gives you a gift.

That’s how I feel about AC SICM 13. Honestly, it’s the best SICM I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a good many of them. It’s the best I’ve felt personally about a SICM. Maybe it’s where I’m at spiritually right now, maybe it was a combination of things, who knows?

Steal Someone’s Idea

I’ve been reading Decisive by the Heath brothers today and have really enjoyed it. We have been a lot of conversations about how to make decisions and I’m always open to new ideas to try and improve my leadership. However, one of the chapters really stood out because it’s something we have done at UVA and encourage others to do.

Steal other people’s ideas.
